Help Larissa take the Plunge!

The anticipation. The shocking cold. The FIERCE competition!

This year’s Bemidji Jaycees BRRRmidji Plunge will be like no other!

Due to COVID-19, only one “celebrity” will take the Plunge this year, and your News Director is one of the four contestants.

I am hardy enough to take the Plunge. I’ve done it twice before, for crying out loud! I skipped 2019 since I was pregnant, and the doctors said that jumping in a frigid lake during the second trimester was a bad idea, but I was still up there in my Carhartt bibs emceeing!

This is my boot on one of the blocks of ice removed from the lake before Plunge 2018. A good ice year!

This year, each celebrity is raising money for local nonprofits, and the one who raises the most will take the Plunge.

I am choosing to raise money for the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter. Domestic violence has traditionally been viewed as a personal, private issue. This is an issue that affects our entire community. The Women’s Shelter is preparing to open a new facility, since the existing one is often at capacity. What happens when a shelter is at capacity? People are turned away! Escaping intimate partner violence is difficult enough without additional obstacles.

From the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

Every relationship differs, but what is most common within all abusive relationships is the varying tactics used by abusers to gain and maintain power and control over the victim. Nearly three in ten women and one in ten men in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner (or former partner) and reported at least one impact related to experiencing these or other forms of violence behavior in the relationship (e.g. feeling fearful, concern for safety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), need for health care, injury, crisis support, need for housing services, need for victim advocacy series, need for legal services, missed work or school).”

I hope you will choose me as your designated tribute!
